Choosing the Right Coating

Choosing the right  coating has become one of the key factors in increasing productivity, improving tool life and reducing down time.  The chart above shows the coating properties and gives guidelines on work materials.  Using this chart, you can determine the coating best suited for your application.

First, determine which coatings are appropriate for the type of material being machined.

The performance of each coating is directly related to the operating conditions (i.e. feed rate, cutting speed and coolant).  Below is the recommended surface footage increase over TIN coated tools for each coating.

TiAlN     20-35%                         TiCN     15-25%
The machine's capabilities regarding horsepower and rpm available should be considered.
